Tibetans and Tibet supporters world-wide are holding protests and campaigns to mark the Global Day of Action for Tibet: 60 Years of Oppression: China’s Failed Tibet Policies.

Under the aegis of the International Tibet Network (ITN), a global coalition of 183 Tibet-related non-governmental organisations, July 13 is being observed to protest the official celebrations of what China calls the 60th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet.

“Tibet campaigners from over 180 organisations in more than 50 countries worldwide today slammed China’s latest propaganda drive in Tibet, to mark the 60th Anniversary of the signing of the 17 Point Agreement of 1951”, a release on the ITN website said today.

The campaigners are bringing the protests to the doorsteps of China by targeting various Chinese embassies and consulates across Europe, Asia, and North America. Protests marches are being held in Toronto, Paris, Munich, Tokyo, Washington, DC, Delhi, and Dharamshala.

“The propaganda concerning China’s supposed ‘achievements’ in Tibet has barely changed over the years, yet Tibetans have repeatedly rejected Chinese rule in huge numbers, with widespread protests across the plateau”, said Tenzin Jigme, international co-ordinator, ITN.

In the exile seat of Dharamshala, the India chapter of the Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) carried out a ‘black march’ with sixty Tibetans and supporters wearing black clothes and carrying black flags symbolic of China’s 60 years of occupation and misrule in Tibet.

“With the new wave of protest growing in Ngaba and Kardze, we are seeing extraordinary resistance by Tibetans against China’s oppression and occupation of Tibet”, said Tenzin Jigdal, campaigns director, SFT India. “China must immediately stop the ongoing crackdown in Kardze and Ngaba and release all those detained and imprisoned at once”.

Chinese authorities last month completely cut off Tibet from outside visitors ahead of the politically sensitive celebrations in mid-July.
