Dharamshala: Three Kardze nuns arrested for carrying out peaceful protests last month have been sentenced to three year prison term each.
In a press statement released earlier today the Dharamshala based Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) cited sources in Tibet confirming the sentence.
The three nuns from Kardze Gyemadrak Nunnery have been identified as Jampa Choedon (31), Sheh Lhamo (21), and Yangchen (28).
“On July 2, the Kardze County Court sentenced three nuns of Kardze Gyemadrak Nunnery to a three years imprisonment each”, the release said. “An official of the Kardze Thinga Township notified to the local people the news after receiving a letter from the Kardze Public Security Bureau (PSB).”
The nuns were arrested on June 15 for carrying out a peaceful protest in the Kardze County market. They raised slogans demanding Tibet’s independence and His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s return.
The sentence comes days before China is scheduled to celebrate 60 years of Tibet’s liberation with a recently released white paper claiming peace and prosperity in Tibet.
