Dharamsala, May 13: A warm and ceremonial reception was accorded to newly elected Prime Minister of Tibet government-in-exile, Lobsang Sangay, at Gagal Airport on his arrival from US.

A large number of Tibetans, including president of National Democratic Party, Chime Youngdung, Khashag (parliament) representatives and many other prominent persons carrying traditional scarves, incense, bouquets and Tibetan flags welcomed Sangay. Harvard scholar Sangay arrived here on late Friday afternoon.

Talking to mediapersons at the airport, Sangay said he is committed to take the Dalai Lama to his home land Lhasa in Tibet. Promising to uphold policies of the Dalai Lama, Sangay said that he will work towards achieving the objective “which the Dalai Lama has set for us”.

In reply to a query about what his priority was, he said it was to restore the freedom of Tibet. “Perhaps, Mahatma Gandhi faced the same question when he started his struggle for freedom and at that time, he must have said that he will make India a free country. Today, I am facing a similar situation.”

He said that the prime challenge was to take up freedom talks with China and his agenda was to make the Tibetans aware of their rights.

Tibetan government-in-exile has tried to hold dialogues with the Chinese government but nine previous rounds of talks between Beijing and the Dalai Lama’s envoys have made no headway. “We are willing to negotiate with Chinese government anytime, anywhere,” the 43-year-old legal scholar said.
