In a televised interview on one of India’s leading news channels, Kalon Tripa Dr Lobsang Sangay said that the spirit of Tibet is stronger than the Chinese hardliners.

Dr Sangay was invited to answer questions on the show Devil’s Advocate hosted by prominent journalist Karan Thapar. The interview was aired Sunday on CNN IBN.

Throughout the 18-minute long interview, Dr Sangay held his ground on sending out the message of ‘hope and belief’ that Tibetans have in their struggle against a tirade of disapproving queries by Thapar.

“Who knew that Hosni Mubarak will no more be the President of Egypt? Things happen and we do believe it will happen to us because it has happened before. His Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama fled to India in 1910. We Tibetans worked hard and made his return possible in 1913. We will make this happen this time too,” said Dr Sangay.

“We have seen China’s ups and downs. We have fought with them, invaded them, occupied them, they’ve occupied us, invaded us, we have had 2000 years of relationship,” the 43-year old Harvard law graduate said while stressing on the “much longer” relation that Tibetans have shared with China as compared to other nations.

When asked if Tibetans are banking on miracles, Dr Sangay expressed his hope in the “fundamentally strong” Tibetan struggle “surviving the Chinese repressive policies”.

“We are banking on our hopes, our belief, our identity, our cause, which is fundamentally strong and it will remain strong for a long period of time and we will survive the Chinese repressive policies,” said the Kalon Tripa.

Responding to questions on the dormant negotiation process with China, the de facto Tibetan Prime Minister said that Tibetans remained sincere in resolving the issue through negotiations and asked China to live up to their claims.

“China propagates that China is a country of rule of law, and wants a country of harmonious society, and a peaceful rising in the world. If these are the principles that they propagate, then they should live up to them,” said Dr Sangay.

Referring to the issue of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, the Kalon Tripa said that China has “no right, no legitimacy and no authority” to interfere in the Tibetan spiritual leader’s reincarnation issue.

“China calls His Holiness the Dalai Lama a devil. They don’t believe in reincarnation, they treat religion as poison and they have no say whatsoever on reincarnation of His Holiness Dalai Lama, for that matter for any reincarnation, They are a communist government, they should stick to their ideology,” said Dr Sangay.
