DHARAMSHALA, November 21: Tenzin Seldon, a Tibetan senior at Stanford University majoring in comparative studies in race and ethnicity has been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.

Announcing the names of the 32 US based recipients of one of the world’s most celebrated academic honours, the Rhodes Trust yesterday in a statement noted Tenzin’s passion “to use her life to bring justice, freedom and equality to the Tibetan people.”

“She is already a major Tibetan leader of the Tibetan diaspora nationally. In addition, she is a fellow at the Center for Companion and Altruism Research and Education at the Stanford School of Medicine, did research among Tibetan refugees in India, and is on the board of directors of The Stanford Daily,” the Rhodes Trust said in the statement.

Tenzin, who earlier this year was awarded the Truman Scholarship, after hearing the news attributed the honour to the “unconditional love, faith, and support” from her mentors, friends, and family members.

“It serves as a reminder of how far Tibetans in the United States have progressed in just one generation,” Tenzin said.

Tenzin had last year organised a dialogue between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and mainland Chinese students and scholars during the Tibetan leader’s visit to Stanford.

“I will leverage this amazing opportunity to create a significant impact for the cause of Tibet and human rights around the globe,” added Tenzin.

Tenzin plans to do the M.Sc. in refugee and forced migration studies and the M.Sc. in modern Chinese studies at Oxford.

The scholarship established in 1902 provides full financial support for Rhodes Scholars to pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Winners of the prestigious award in the past include former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana, and Tashi Rabgey founder of the Tibet Sustainable Governance Program and visiting scholar at the Elliott School of International Affairs of George Washington University.
